RC44 Sweden Cup 18 – 22 July

Returning to the sailing mecca of Marstrand Island, Sweden, after a successful debut in 2011, the RC44 fleet will be in their element as the venue provides a spectacular stadium sailing arena for spectators to show their support and watch the fleet race, just a stone’s throw from the shore.

RC44 Team CEEREF will be aiming to repeat the success of 2011, when the conditions they faced on the water in Marstrand obviously suited them well; despite the leaderboard snakes and ladders throughout the week, they snared second place.

Founded some 800 years ago, Marstrand exudes history, art and culture and its architecture reflects the appeal of a place which for many decades was the summer seaside getaway for members of the Swedish Royal Family. The Carlstens Fästning, an imposing 17th century fortress, looms large over Marstrand while the Town Hall is reputedly the oldest stone building in Sweden.

Located 40 minutes north-west of Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city, Marstrand actually sits astride two islands – the islands of Marstrandsön and Koön. Marstrandsön is furthest out to sea and where the city centre is found.

With a reliable afternoon sea breeze and open sea to the west, Marstrand has become the most popular 'guest harbour' in the whole of Sweden, and as well as the Match Cup Sweden, the town also hosts the annual Marstrand Regatta and many other major sailing championships including the RC44 Cup.
